Tips to Protect Your Home from Burglaries and Protection with NYC Home Insurance

Category: Our Blog

There has been a remarkable dip in the crime rate in NYC over the past 20 years. Burglaries in particular have dropped significantly. The Scientific American reports that there were 18,600 burglaries in NYC in 2010, compared to 122,055 in 1990. This is good news for NYC home insurance policyholders, who should be benefiting from cheaper rates as the risk of burglaries decreases.

Still, 18,600 is not exactly a small number, and homeowners should still take extra precautionary measures to ensure their home is protected from thieves.

Some home security tips include:

Make sure all entry points are secure. Deadbolt locks are usually considered the best option, and not just for the front of the house. Burglars often find a way in through the back of the house, so make sure you’ve got all parts of the house covered. That also means putting alarm signs up at the back, as well as the front, of the dwelling.

Install a burglar alarm. There are a number of different options when it comes to burglar and intrusion alarms. Do your research before deciding to purchase an alarm system, and make sure you’re dealing with a reputable vendor.

Get a dog to deter would-be burglars. Dog’s are often very effective burglar deterrents. Don’t think that small dogs aren’t effective; they are often the best at making a burglar think twice, due to their tendency to yap incessantly.

It certainly may be worth the expense to secure your home, as effective security devices deter would-be criminals and may also reduce your NYC home insurance premiums. For more on home insurance to suit your needs, contact one of our agents.
